BTCV British Trust for Conservation Volunteers

That’s what BTCV stands for. We had a walk in Finsbury Park this morning. Remember that the London 2012 borough of Waltham Forest (who’d have known?) has joined up with LB Haringey. Who actually knows that except the greens? So at long last I got to include myself in a wonderful experience in North London.  Finsbury Park is like a dead beast full of maggots on a Sunday morning: The place is heaving. All sorts of running groups, American Football going on, open air gym, cafe, kiddies’ playgrounds, laid-out gardens, squirrels, Canada Geese, moorhen, Mallards, dogs on leads, and the sun shone brightly.

Before all of that I passed through Clapton Pond, Hackney and the new leaves are streaming on the willows there. Blossom all the way to Manor House and Purim craziness going on from Amhurst Park to Lower Clapton. Good day. Wanted to stop at Grodzinski’s for some poppy seed cake but next year maybe.

Spent time this weekend too at Open Stage 2012 Theatre Royal Stratford east E15 .What a project!  We volunteer to work in the surrounding community to uphold the original ethos of TRSE as outlined by Joan Littlewood. This time we had another opportunity to go backstage , to see the hemp house with the massive manilla ropes. There’s one particular heavy rope which only one woman has ever pulled. Hey ho! I also pulled that bugger. Trumpet fanfare ….Gym paying off                                                                    .

Back to my reading today “East Of Eden” for tomorrow is reading group at Homerton Library in Brooksby’s Walk, Hackney.Love that book. Love Homerton too.

Minty off Eastenders is coming to Downsell Park, Tottenham N 15 on March 28th 2pm to open the cafe there. Eastenders post code is E20….so is the new build part of Stratford east i .e. Westfields etc.

So Waltham Forest is definitely merging services and interests with Haringey.

Up Your Street5 will have to expand to include all those free events in Haringey and I am thinking firstly of BTCV  re: conservation and the green gym. Yeah

Was happy to note that my insistence that all 5 London 2012 boroughs should welcome seniors crossing boundaries and joining in events together is paying off. The seniors in Waltham Forest were hardly catered for. Funding, schmunding. They were forced to go over the roads into Hackney, Tower Hamlets and Newham to seek joy. We do want healthy mentally balanced seniors .

Shaping our awareness

was at the first of a series of FREE workshiops in Waltham Forest, you know the Borough whose council is allegedly hardly preparing for London 2012 (not just me who says that!) all about environment, Permaculture and sustainability for Waltham Forest businesses delivered by Islingtonians. It was just wonderful. Spot on in terms of pace, information, participant interaction, and group loveliness. We were all full up on the delicious dinner served before the proceedings. What a welcome! Waltham Forest always comes up top when it comes to receiving guests so we hold out positively for the Games.

Once you’ve accepted the science of Climate Change then you can be practical in the work place. Lots of talk about transport costs, energy bills, Waltham Forest’s car borrowing schemes, disposal of recycled materials and the rest and what does go into a cup of tea. it was ace. We were mostly the converted but always uplifting to come together for the common good. was sometimes reminiscent of the measures the public had to adopt during the 1970s oil crisis. Hey ho!  Hold onto your seat belts. A rough ride ahead.

Next workshop’s in mid-March . All welcome. I’ll list it in Up Your Steet5 issue 10. It’s in a fabulous venue. Today we were guests of Argall Bid in the Argyll Industrial Estate altho’ I will check on that name as over the years the dump by any other name has had so many unconvincing titles. That area is where not even High Street Seniors would want to stroll at night. What is does have is the pong of Kingsmill Bread being manufactured; I mean baked.

Off to the Stratford Theatre Royal  TRSE to see “The Graft” AGAIN because I can! I am after all an Open Stage 2012 volunteer. The play finishes its highly successful run in 2 days time. Get there!
